For Christopher Smith, the future includes a small-town church, a place of hope for families facing difficult circumstances, and the opportunity to prepare for ministry alongside his son.
Recently accepted into the Master of Divinity program at Queens College of Theology, Christopher brings years of professional experience and a clear sense of purpose: to serve communities that too often feel overlooked.
“My desire is not simply to obtain a degree, but to be equipped to faithfully preach God’s Word, shepherd His people, strengthen the local church, and advance His kingdom through a ministry that reflects both the truth and grace of Jesus Christ,” he shared.
Finding Room for a Calling
Like many adults considering theological education, Christopher needed a path that could fit alongside work and family responsibilities. He wanted meaningful academic preparation while remaining attentive to the people and commitments already in his care.
Cost also played an important role.
“I wanted to earn my degree without taking on additional student loan debt, allowing me to be a good steward of the resources God has entrusted to me,” Christopher explained.
In choosing QCT, he saw an opportunity to pursue his education while continuing to meet those responsibilities. He also hopes to share the experience with his son, who is currently enrolled in Queens undergrad program.
“Studying together will allow me to mentor and encourage him as he grows academically and spiritually, while preparing both of us for a lifetime of service to Christ.”
Bringing a Lifetime of Experience to Ministry
Christopher’s interest in caring for others already shapes his professional life. His background includes nutrition and dietary management, and he is an ordained chaplain through the National Association of Christian Ministers. Through his work helping people improve their health and supporting their recovery, he has come to value care that addresses both physical and spiritual needs.
Now, he wants to deepen the biblical and theological knowledge he brings to that work. One immediate goal is to establish and teach an adult Sunday school class within his local congregation. Over time, he hopes to apply with Village Missions and pursue pastoral service in a small-town church.
Having lived and worked in rural communities, Christopher has seen the effects of poverty, isolation, addiction, and family hardship. Those experiences have shaped his desire to provide consistent biblical teaching and compassionate pastoral care.
A Vision for Hope and Restoration
Christopher’s long-term vision includes establishing a Christ-centered recovery ranch, a ministry focused on discipleship, pastoral support, and helping individuals and families facing addiction, trauma, and other difficult life circumstances. It is a vision that connects his professional experience, his faith, and his commitment to serving others. He also hopes to invest in future generations through mentoring, teaching, and writing.
For Christopher, theological education is part of preparing to put those hopes into practice.
